The Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors were not content with just claiming the Great Rivers Athletic Conference Championship. They went out and made a statement.
The Lady Warriors took a 77-46 victory over the Olney Central Lady Knights Wednesday at the Spencer Sports Center to improve to 25-4 overall and 15-1 in the league. Olney Central falls to 6-9 in the league, 11-17 overall.
The Lady Warriors trailed, 13-11, in the first half when Mariah Fleming hit a three-pointer, with just under 12 minutes to go, putting the WVC club in front, 14-13. Seconds later, Sarah Thomas dropped in a trey and the Lady Warriors were up, 17-13. From there on, the Lady Warriors went on a 23-13 run to take a 40-26 halftime lead.
The Lady Warriors hit 15 of 34 overall in the first half, 44.1 percent, and went five of 12 from three-point range, 41.7 percent. They were five of seven at the line, 71.4 percent.
Olney Central, meanwhile, was 10 of 23 from the field, 43.5 percent, and four of 10 from three-point range, 40 percent. The Lady Knights were two of four at the line, 50 percent.
WVC had a balanced attack with Jessica Schurman hitting nine points and Shauna Whitley eight. Jessica Zavoral had 10 for Olney Central.
WVC also held a 22-8 rebounding margin at halftime.
The Lady Knights got to within nine points in the second half but the Lady Warriors kept pulling away.
The Lady Warriors were 14 of 38 from the field in the second 20 minutes, 36.8 percent, and 29 of 72 for the game, 40.3 percent. They were four of 10 from three-point range, 40 percent, in the half, and five of six at the line for 83.3 percent. For the game, WVC was nine of 22 from three-point range for 40.9 percent, and 10 of 13 at the line for 76.9 percent for the game.
Olney Central was six of 21 overall in the second half, 28.6 percent and three of nine from three-point range, 33.3 percent. For the game Olney Central was 16 of 44 overall from the field, 36.4 percent, and seven of 19 from three-point range, 36.8 percent. The Lady Knights hit seven of 13 free throws, 53.8 percent.
Brandi McKinney had 13 points to lead WVC's' balanced attack while Whitley added 11.
Savordl and Tara Wornica both finished with 11 for Olney Central. WVC out-rebounded Olney, 51-13. Danielle Dixon pulled down 11.
Turnovers were nearly even at 16 for Olney and 15 for WVC. But the Lady Warriors had eight steals to Olney's four.
