CENTRALIA - The Wabash Valley College Warriors spotted the Kaskaskia College Blue Devils a 6-0 lead Saturday afternoon, then came roaring back for a 91-78 victory in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

The win improves WVC to 13-6 overall and 2-4 in the league. Kaskaskia falls to 9-9 and 2-4.

In other GRAC action, Southeastern Illinois nipped Lincoln Trail 67-63, Lake Land dropped Olney Central, 88-78, and Southwestern Illinois got past Rend Lake, 66-64.

The Warriors tied the game at 17-17 on Corey Wickware's three-pointer, then took the lead a few moments later on Josh Lockett's three-point play. After trading points for a few moments, Cornelius Walker put the Warriors up by five with two free throws. Andre Miller added a bucket, but then Tim Baines cut it back to five, 30-25, with 6:30 to go in the half.

But Walker added a trey and Cornelius Chatt slammed one home and the Warriors were up by a 35-25 score. Kaskaskia never got closer than six.

At the half the Warriors were up by a 44-36 score.

During the first half's last 10 minutes the Warriors were using a full-court press which forced Kaskaskia into turnovers. Chatt's slam dunk helped get the WVC club into and up-tempo game. Defensively, WVC shut down Kaskaskia's outside shooting.

The two teams traded points as the second half opened, but when Miller hit a shot it started the Warriors on an 11-4 run, and into double-digit leads they would never give up.

Desmond Holloway put the Warriors up by 20, 68-48, with a slam dunk, then Chatt gave WVC a 22-point advantage with a fast break bucket.

Wabash Valley's biggest lead was 23, and that came twice. Chatt scored on another fast break for the first 23-point advantage, then added a three-point shot from the left corner for the second. That second big lead, 80-57, came with 8:00 to play.

WVC maintained leads of 20 points or more until Kaskaskia's Jordan Lee cut it to 87-70, but only 1:40 remained.

"We got off to a good start," said WVC Head Coach Dan Sparks. "We went with our small lineup to start the game."

"We built a lead and the kids worked hard. Wickware and Chatt played well. It was a good team effort, and we played well defensively. We really got after it," he added.

"This was a good game for us to win on the road. We've got Logan and Lincoln Trail next week and winning those two will put us at .500 in the league. After Lincoln Trail we start the second half of the conference season."

Chatt led five Warriors in double figures with 29 points. Miller added 12, Jared Maners and Wickware 11 each and Lockett 10.

WVC hit 15 of 24 free throws for 62.5 percent.

Baines had 24 to lead Kaskaskia while Lee added 21.

The Blue Devils hit six of 11 free throws for 54.5 percent.
