INA - Rend Lake College grabbed its first wins of the season today in an unofficial home opener this afternoon against St. Louis Community College - Florissant Valley. RLC, now 2-6 following a sluggish spring opening in Mississippi, hosted Flo Valley due to impending rain in Ferguson. However, RLC's official home opener is scheduled for Thursday against St. Louis Community College - Mineral Area.
Today against the Fury, RLC sophomore Jacob Wente ushered in the Warriors' first win of the season, and reliever Eric Davis got the save, coming in during the top of the seventh for an 8-5 victory. Wente struck out four with five walks. Soph starter Cam Alkins followed suit in the second game, striking out three and walking none in a complete game, four-hit shutout.
The Warriors struck first, scoring six runs in the first inning of the first game. They went on to score a single run in the second and sixth. The Fury came back with a run in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth and sixth, but it wasn't enough as The Lake hung on to win. Both teams had six hits and an error. Jesse Schmidt went 3-3 with a double and RBI, and Luke Shuemaker had a double and RBI.
Alkins pitched confidently in the second game with a stellar defense behind him, particularly Raymond Fuentes' acrobatic plays at shortstop. Fuentes also shined at the plate, going 2-2 with a single and key lead-off double in the sixth that eventually led to him crossing the plate as the winning run.
RLC pitching records so far are Freddy Cabrera (0-1), Jacob Wente (1-0), Eric Davis (0-1), Spencer Ammons (0-1), Cameron Alkins (1-0), Patrick Flanigan (0-1), Tomas Rodriguez (0-1), Luke Shuemaker (0-1)
