Logan 95, WVC 64
CARTERVILLE - The Wabash Valley College basketball Warriors came up way short in their attempt to win their 20th game of the season Wednesday night as they dropped a 95-64 decision to the John A. Logan College Volunteers.
The Warriors missed easy shots inside, and by the time they did get on the board, Logan had already scored 10 points. WVC's first point came from Desmond Holloway on a free throw.
The Warriors were unable to connect except for two more Holloway free throws, and it was near the first half's mid-point before Kaihrique Irick was able to get WVC's first basket. By that time, the Vols had put 19 points on the board.
Logan went on to take a 35-9 lead which the Warriors were able to cut back to 13 just before halftime. That came on an Irick putback.
Logan, however, was up by a 48-33 score at the break.
Early in the second half the Warriors were able to get to within eight, at 48-40, as Cornelius Chatt dropped in a three-pointer and Jared Maners hit two at the line. But Logan went on a 47-24 run to put the game away. Logan's biggest lead was 91-59 as Dustin Kendrick hit a free throw.
Warriors Coach Dan Sparks termed the defeat an "embarrassing loss."
"I was really disappointed in our play from the start of the game to the finish of the game," he said. "We just never got out of the box. We missed four easy layups to start the game that would have put us in there at 8-8, 10-12, and we missed those. It was kind of like somebody let the air out of the balloon."
Sparks said he told the team at halftime they were down less than a point a minute for the second half, and that all they had to do was play some defense and execute the offense. After the Warriors cut it to eight, Sparks said it was "like the roof fell in."
"They're an aggressive team," he said of the Vols. "You have to admire their aggressiveness in the game. That's what hurt us. We're not a real aggressive team. Anytime a team is aggressive that really hurts us."
"They're playing very well right now," he added about Logan. "They shoot the ball well, they rebound it, they defend tough."
"We got it going for about eight minutes in the second half and that's about the extent of it," Sparks concluded.
Irick led WVC with 18 points. Corey Wickware added 10.
The Warriors hit 21 of 28 free throws for 75 percent.
Russell Moore led Logan with 23. Chris Parks added 14, as did Lazeric Jones. Jesse Perry scored 12.
The Vols hit 25 of 37 free throws for 67.5 percent.
