PENSACOLA, Fla. - Friday the 13th was not an unlucky day for the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors softball team.
The WVC squad swept the Jefferson Davis War Hawks, 4-1, and 4-3, in eight innings, to complete their spring trip. The two wins put WVC at 11-0 on the season.
Kristen Broadway went the distance in the opener to pick up her sixth win. She gave up one run, unearned, on four hits and four walks with eight strike outs.
WVC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Jeff Davis cut it to 2-1 in the last of the frame. WVC added two runs in the fifth.
Emerald Graham, LeAnn Collins and Jackie Porter were each one for three with an RBI. For Collins, it was her 100th career RBI. Brooke McCartney was two for four with two runs scored.
Kayla Meny started the second game and went 5.0 innings. She gave up two runs, both earned, on nine hits with five strike outs. Broadway pitched 3.0 innings and got the win, her seventh. Broadway gave up one run on one hit and one walk with three strike outs.
WVC won the game in the last of the eighth when McCartney, who was three for five, scored on Collins' hit. Collins was one for five with the RBI.
Emily Priar was three for four, Mary Tindle one for four with an RBI and Porter one for two with an RBI.
"I'm very pleased with the team effort," said WVC Coach Paul Schnarre. "These last four games have been very competitive, but I felt our girls responded to the challenge."
Schnarre's team gets no rest. They travel to Shawnee today (Monday), then go to Southeastern Illinois tomorrow to open Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.
