In the opener, Wabash pounded out a 14-4 win over Lincoln Trail and then in the second game of the day they downed Trail 11-5 to win the championship.   Wabash catcher Jacob Rhodes was name MVP of the tournament.

There were no home runs and a few errors in the field, but still plenty of drama Tuesday afternoon at Kaskaskia College in Centralia as John A. Logan College erased an early 1-0 deficit to claim a 4-2 win over top-seeded Lake Land and earn its first-ever Region 24 Tournament title.

Down by a single tally, the Volunteers scored two runs off starter Geri Whitman in the top of the third inning to take the lead. Hanna Brindisi and Celci Mueller walked to start the frame. Lara Runge then banged one off the fence in center, but Jenna Cochran, pinchrunning for Brindisi, went back to tag at second and got a late start. A perfect relay throw home nipped Cochran at the plate for the first out. Mueller advanced to third on the play.

Nicole Cheek then grounded to short. The throw home in an attempt to get Mueller was in the dirt and got away from the catcher, allowing Mueller to score the tying run. Runge also came around to score on the play.

The Vols moved ahead 3-1 in the fourth when Ragan Dunn singled, stole second and scored on Lara Runge's single. Logan had a chance to blow the game wide open the next inning, but Tiffany Pinnick lined into a double play with two runners on base.

The Lakers pulled to within one at 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth in a most peculiar fashion. Aubrey Frank doubled. Amber Hane was inserted as a pinchrunner. She came in to score when Kaitlyn Reiff's infield grounder was fielded by Vols' second baseman Nicole Cheek and her throw ricocheted off the base umpire. No obstruction was called.

Logan got some breathing room in the seventh when Rachelle Runge doubled and scored on Pinnick's RBI single on a 3-0 count.

Sophomore righthander Chelsea Wallace committed a one-out throwing error in the bottom of the seventh, but the veteran hurler pitched around the miscue to pick up her 15th win of the spring against only four losses.

"We were able to take advantage of some bobbles that they made in the third inning that led to a couple of runs and then scored a couple on our own and that was enough to get it done with Chelsea's pitching," said Vols head coach Bruce Jilek.

Wallace surrendered six hits and only one earned run while striking out four and walking none. Wallace, who transferred to Logan this past summer, said she was just happy to be a part of softball history for the Vols.

"It was really exciting. I'm glad I got the ball and was able to help the team out. I can't wait for nationals and I know the other girls can't wait either."

Lara Runge paced the Logan offense with three hits. Kellerman also had multiple hits with two safeties in three at bats. Rachelle Runge, Pinnick and Dunn all collected one hit.

"We just came out and played the best we could," centerfielder Lara Runge said. "We got on base and pushed the ball around and made them play. Today, we were fortunate enough to come out on top."

Runge said a trip to nationals is humbling.

"But I think we deserve to be out there. We have worked hard to get where we are at."

The Vols improve to 38-9 overall and will now advance to the 16-team national tournament in St. George, Utah May 20-22.

CARTERVILLE, Ill. - Rend Lake College split 7-6 and 8-7 in a hard-fought matchup with John A. Logan College yesterday in GRAC baseball action on the road.

The Warriors and Volunteers were fighting for a valuable third-place spot in the league until Olney Central's win column was inflated by two games after an ineligibility was discovered on Southwestern Illinois College's roster. SWIC was forced to forfeit two wins over OCC which put the Blue Knights in third place in the league earlier today.

In the 7-6 loss: RLC chipped away at a 6-3 lead by scoring two runs in the fifth inning. Logan added a run in the sixth to go up 7-5. RLC tacked on one run in the seventh when Daniel Peters moved George Oquendo to third who scored off Ray Delvalle's sacrifice fly. But it wasn't enough as the Warriors came up short.

Nathan Dorris picked up the loss in the first game. Ray Fuentes went 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored for RLC, and Zach Labuwi had a home run and two RBI.

Derek Trovillion homered for three runs in the first for Logan. Greenwell went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Volunteers.

Rend Lake overcame a 7-1 deficit to take the nightcap 8-7 in extra innings.

Luke Shuemaker started and threw six and a third-innings for RLC in the nightcap before AJ Martin stepped in for the final three and two-thirds to pick up the win with four strikeouts. The two helped hold the Vols scoreless over seven innings.

Logan scored its only runs in the first and second innings.

RLC scored the winning run in the top of the ninth off a fielder's choice by Richard Arias that scored Labuwi from third.

Delvalle went 3-5 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored. Tyler O'Daniel was 3-5 and Fuentes had a monster day, going 2-5 with a double and a home run for four RBI. Labuwi and Oquendo homered. Oquendo's was a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left field.

RLC, now 13-8 in the league and 24-21 overall, is tied for third place in the GRAC with OCC. They are ahead of a 13-11 JALC team. RLC will host Lincoln Trail Saturday and head there on Sunday. Saturday's double header is at noon.

INA, Ill. - Rend Lake College's 71-65 win over #9 Lincoln Land tonight in Ina means the Warriors live to fight another day in the NJCAA DII Region XXIV Tournament. Rend Lake, the 8-seed, will face #1 Lincoln College at noon, Saturday, at Shawnee College in Ullin, Ill.

The Loggers (7-24) stuck with a zone defense most of the game against the Warriors tonight. It forced sophomore guards Jimmy Abraham (Katy, Texas) and Reggie Reed (St. Petersburg, Fla.), as well as freshman guard Dustin Winter (Pinckneyville, Ill.), to hit the mark from beyond the arch. They answered brilliantly, hitting 10 of 18 from three-point range and combining for 50 of The Lake's 71 total points.

Freshmen Isaiah Cunningham (Eldorado, Ill.) and James Pope (Gainesville, Fla.) pitched in eight and seven, respectively, and Edrie Brodie Jr. (Newark, N.J.) scored five for RLC.

"I didn't think we played real well," RLC Head Coach Tim Wills said. "It's a tough team to play against. They cause us some matchup problems because they have so many guards."

The Loggers started four guards and lone forward Devin Wells (Centralia, Ill.). Sophomore guard Marcus Lewis (Madison, Ill.) didn't miss a shot until the second half and led all scorers with 20; and sophomore guard Carlton Westbrook, a graduate of Centralia High School, scored 15 of his 17 total points in the second half.

"I didn't think our intensity was where it needed to be most of the night," Wills added. "Midway into the second half, we got where we needed to be and pulled away, so that was a positive sign."

The Warriors grew a slim 27-25 halftime lead to go ahead by double digits late into the second half. Reed and Abraham combined to go 63 percent from the free throw line when Lincoln Land started fouling in the final minute and change. The Loggers pulled to within three points in the final two minutes, but couldn't catch the Warriors.

"They played well," Wills said of Reed and Abraham, who led the team with 19 each. "And in a game like this, you expect the sophomore guys to step up. Hopefully some of the guys who didn't play well tonight will on Saturday."

Sophomores EJ Randolph (Mt. Vernon, Ill.), who is averaging 12 points a game, and Sotiris Psyrris - just under 11 ppg - were kept scoreless tonight by the Loggers. Wills said everyone on his team will need to produce against the next Lincoln. RLC lost twice to the Lynx of Lincoln College in the regular season - 79-76 at home and 73-67 on the road.

"Lincoln is the number one seed so they are going to be a good team. We played them close both times this season. We will have to play much better than we did tonight if we are going to have any success against them."

RLC finished the regular season at 8-20 and 2-14 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, and is now 1-0 in the postseason. Other matchups Saturday at Ullin include #4 Shawnee and #5 Danville Area at 2 p.m., #2 Lewis and Clark and the winner of #7John Wood and #10 Spoon River at 4 p.m., and #3 Illinois Central and #6 Parkland at 6 p.m. Two teams will advance from the tournament to the NJCAA DII National Championships. RLC is in the top half of the bracket with Lincoln, Shawnee and Danville.

The Southwestern Illinois baseball Blue Storm opened the season with a bang by winning a pair of games against #13 ranked Jefferson College 2-1 and 3-2.
In the opener, Shawn Spainhoward tossed a 3 hitter, striking out 5 and giving up one unearned run.   Trailing 1-0 in the 5th, shortstop David Miller's 2 out, 2 run double was all Spainhoward needed for the win.
In the nitecap, Austin Thater went 6 innings striking out 5 and giving up 2 earned runs for the win.  Joe Grzywacz picked up the save in the 7th.
Miller again provided the spark putting the Blue Storm on top with an RBI double in the 3rd.  The Storm went ahead 3-0 in the 5th on and RBI single by catcher Ian Sikes and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Kyle Stanton.
Jefferson scored two in the 6th on a 2 out, 2 run double by CJ Rose but Thater struck out Preston Aldridge to preserve the lead.  In the 7th Grzywacz got the save by getting a ground out with the bases loaded and 2 out to give the Blue Storm the doubleheader sweep.

Rend Lake College freshman forward Talaya Earls hit the game winning free-throws with .08 seconds left on the clock.

INA, Ill. -  Coach Ashley Allen's game plan for the Feb. 17 conference matchup with Kaskaskia College may have included being down late in the second half. She may have even planned for foul trouble. But there was no way she could have seen this coming.

Starting the game with only seven players, and coming out of halftime down 57-39 and without guard Keke Spurling, the Lady Warriors didn't just last the final seven minutes with only four players. They came back from an 11 point deficit to win! A very excited Allen called the 89-87 victory "the game of the century.

"I've never seen a game played that long with four on five," Allen said. "It was an unbelievable game."

With only seven players and 25 fouls called in the first half, nearly everyone left on Allen's roster was in foul trouble at the start of the second. One of RLC's top scorers, Kujania Walker, fouled out. Then center Heather Murphy was called for her fifth. That left RLC with only four players and an eternity left on the clock. Kaskaskia started with eight players, none of whom fouled out.

"I honestly thought, we've done it before and we can do it again. Plus, we practice with four people," Allen said. "They would double team whoever had the ball. So, I told them 'We are going to shoot threes.' When I told them to shoot, they shot it. When it went in, we said thank goodness. If it didn't, we had to rebound. It was one of those games where you had to be there to believe it. They played hard, but it was by the grace of God."

RLC used every one of its timeouts and tied the game with only 19 seconds left when sophomore Megan Clark fouled and sent KC to the line. Freshman Misty Webster was the only player on the floor for RLC to have less than four fouls. The Blue Angels went up by three when Allen drew up a play to give RLC's leading scorer, freshman Cierra Dotson, a good look to tie. She didn't get the good look, but she did get the bucket.

"She hit the toughest three ever, with two people on her in the corner," Allen explained.

Tie game. Less than five seconds left. RLC trapped KC's inbound pass and got a turnover. A designed alley-oop play to freshman forward Talaya Earls drew a foul. Earls stepped to the line and sunk both free throws with eight-tenths of a second left to close the lid on the Lady Warriors' 15th win of the season.

KC sophomore Keianna Evans led all scorers with 13 of 15 from the line for 33. Dotson led RLC with 30, Clark had 19, Earls put up 23 and Webster had 10.

RLC is now 15-12 overall and 8-5 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. Tonight's win could bump RLC up to second or third in the league. The Lady Warriors will head to Wabash Valley College on Monday.

RLC Lady Warriors 37 89 - Dotson 13 3-3 30, Walker 2 0-0 5, Clark 7 1-2 19, Earls 7 8-10 23, Webster 4 2-2 10, Murphy 1 0-0 2. 3-pointers 7 (Dotson, Walker, Clark 4, Earls), Team fouls 23, Foul outs - Walker, Murphy.

KC Blue Angels 57 87 - Fark 2 0-0 5, Klinkel 1 2-2 4, Evans 8 13-15 33, Oulrey 3 2-2 11, Smith 6 3-3 17, Williams 0 2-2 2, Holder 4 1-2 10, Herron 3 0-0 6. 3-pointers 11 (Fark, Evans 4, Oulrey 3, Smith 2, Holder), Team fouls 18, Foul outs - none.

Another typical night in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC).  Lake Land College needed two of its reserves to help its winning ways 80-52 against the scrappy Rend Lake College Warriors.  The Lakers improve their record to 5-3 in the GRAC and 14-8 overall.

Bryon "Fugi" Wright (Paducah, KY) poured in a season high 17 points on 6 of 7 shooing from the field and 5 of 6 from behind the arc. "He's doing a really good job of knocking down the open jump shot," Lake Land coach Cedric Brown said. "That's part of the reason why we're playing so well.

"I think the guys are finally starting to come together. We're doing the little things, taking care of the basketball, trying to play inside-out. By doing that, Paris (Carter) and Moussa (Gueye) are commanding double teams and they're doing a really good job of passing the ball out of the double teams and finding shooters, and our shooters are finally starting to knock down shots."

The other part of the Paducah Tilghman duo, Stefon Perry added 12 points and 4 rebounds.  Carter gave the Lakers 13 points and 7 boards, while Travis Scott added 11.  Athough Gueye only had 4 points he dominated the glass with 14 and affected the game defensively by recording 7 blocks.

"Moussa is progessing well" Coach Brown said.  "He is a presence on the defensive end and he is getting better each game offensively."

The Lakers enter the second half  of the conference season with the high-powered Volunteers of John A. Logan.  The Vols are currently undefeated in GRAC play and are 16-4 overall.  In their last meeting, the Vols outlasted the Lakers in ovetime 77-75 in Mattoon.  The Lakers are 1-4 in their last five meetings with John A. Logan and have not beaten them in Carterville since Coach Brown took over the program.

"Real tough ball games," Brown said. "We're just going to get back to work on Monday and prepare for John A. Logan. And we're going to get down there on Wednesday and try to continue to play good basketball."  Tip off is at 7:30pm.

Hot shooting gives the Lakers a 97-67 victory over the Statesmen of Lincoln Trail.     On a night where both coaches wore no shoes to raise money for Haiti relief, the Lakers finally found some relief in their tenuous shooting woes.  They shot 10 for 17 from behind the arc and 19 of 25 from the charity stripe.  Layton Seeber had 19 points on 7 of 12 from the field and 5 of 8 from the 3 point line.  Paris Carter had another monster day with 24 points on 9 of 13 from the field and 6 of 11 from the line.  When asked what the difference was from the other 20 games Carter replied, "We're just practicing hard and coming together as a team. "The shooters are knocking down shots and the point guards are making plays." The Lakers next contest is Saturday night in Ina, IL against Rend Lake College.  Tip off is at 7:30pm.
